If mounting hardware no longer holds their original torque, or if they are excessively worn, they should be replaced. When inspecting strut mounting hardware, many of these types of components can stretch or deform if over-torqued or if they have been loosened and retightened multiple times, resulting in a noise. If the noise occurs while turning, then the upper bearing assembly should be inspected and/or replaced. If the noise occurs while driving over bumps with a strut, then the upper mounting plate should be inspected and replaced if necessary. ![]() If you have recently worked on the suspensions or swapped your tires, and notice knocking noise when driving at high speed, check the lug nuts. ![]() One can swap tires because of a tire rotation or flat tires. Check the brackets to make sure they didn’t get spread apart excessively when the original shock was removed. When working on the suspension system that needs taking off the tires, the technician will remove the lug nuts. It goes on the post, and then the shock, and then the retaining bolt. I found a 1/32 spacer washer at Home Depot of all places (after looking everywhere) that solved the problem completely for 0.75. Using new hardware and mounting bolts help ensure it’s tightened securely. When the bolt was torqued tight, the misalignment spacer could still wiggle around and make noise. Some shock absorbers utilize a "clevis" type mount, which must squeeze the sides of the shock's "mounting sleeve" very securely in order to prevent noise. If the noise is present with a replacement shock absorber, check that the mountings are tightened securely, and look for other worn suspension parts. Grab the end of the sway bar link with both hands and wiggle it up and down. If you usually hear a rattling noise when driving over bumps, there’s a good chance it could be the sway bar links. Remember that looks can be deceiving a mounting or bushing can appear to be tight but allow movement when driving. Sway bar links tend to rattle or make knocking sounds when driving over bumps. Start by checking the components that attach the shock or strut to the vehicle.
